Engineering student wins May Queen Ball contest

An engineering student, Aishwarya Muraleedharan, walked away with top honours in the ninth May Queen Ball hosted at the Diplomatic Club by Goan Welfare Association of Qatar.
Aishwarya, a former student at MES Indian School, pipped Dolly Harish Kanjani in the final to clinch the keenly contested competition where beauties from at least six countries took part.
Reema Venkat was the second runner-up.
The winner is currently a first year B Tech student at IES College of Engineering, Thrissur in Kerala state.
Longinus Fernandes, choreographer of the Oscar Award winning Slumdog Millionaire, crowned the winner.
The crown winner will participate in Bahrain’s May Queen Ball to be held on May 28 in Manama. Young Goans Club Bahrain has sponsored the airline ticket, visa and hotel accommodation.
Aishwarya also got a Doha-Amsterdam-Doha ticket, sponsored by KLM, a gold pendant from Akshaya Jewellers and an array of prizes including a weekend stay and lunch for two at Four Seasons Hotel, shopping vouchers from Al Muftah and Domasco’s Westar wrist watch.

Aishwarya Muraleedharan, a first year B-Tech student from IES College of Engineering in Thrissur, Kerala was crowned the ninth May Ball Queen by Choreographer of Oscar award winning film Slumdog Millionaire Longinus Fernandes.

On May 7, Thursday night in Doha, Qatar it was the turn of Longinus to set the dance floor on fire and lifts the spirits of his eager fans at the ninth annual May Ball of Goan Welfare Association Qatar, all of whom were eager to shake a hip, hug him, shake hands and some who took an opportunity to take a autograph for him.

And some 150 to 200 fans who were turned away missed out their chance to dance with Longinus to the tunes of the popular songs‘Jai Ho’ and ‘Papu cant Dance Sala’ which were choreographed by him, before shooting into the lime light with Slumdog Millionaire.

The forty year-old turned heads on at the May Ball and for the organizers the dance was a roaring success, for whom bigger and better has been the motto for the last eight years.

Comedian Jimmy Moses kept the crowd in good spirits with his rib tickling comedy.

She has flown in to Doha from Kerala to bag the top honours at the May Queen which is one of the main socializing event of the year for Indians from the tiny coastal state of Goa.

In the beginning, the event was kicked off by Simon D’Silva, president of Goan Welfare Association with the opening words in mother tongue Konkani followed by ace compere Updesh Swar, the mood-setter of the evening. Updesh Swar introduced the one and only top Goan band in attendance “Forefront” by bringing up on the stage every member of the group individually along with their respective musical instruments playing in a very exclusive style by singing Proud Mary by Tina Turner followed by the classical ballroom set with the opening number “Claudia”, a very famous Konkani song composed by late Chris Perry dedicated to all the Goan tiatrists, musicians, poets, writers and directors.

The crowd started pouring in continuously on to the dance floor. The music from the Forefront kept the young and old on the dancing floor enjoying till the wee hours of the morning cheering the band and complimenting as one of the best shows in the Middle East. The vivid scenes of Goa projected on a giant screen depicted the touristic essence of Goa for the large number of attendees of different nationalities.

High-energy pulsating dance beats, loads of prizes, performances by Longinus Fernandes, Choreographer of Slumdog Millionaire, rib tickling comedy by Jimmy Moses, spectacular beauty pageant and Qatar audience were all the part and parcel of the colossal ninth edition of May Queen Ball along with the senior Goan leaders from GCC countries, Francis Correia – President of Young Goans Club Bahrain, Carmo Santos - Chairman of Goan Cultural Centre Kuwait, Alexander Fernandes, President of Colva United Centre Kuwait and other Goan dignitaries from Kuwait, Dubai and Bahrain with their families graced the occasion.

Youngsters were cheering for GWA’s Vice President Martin Mascarenhas when joined Forefront and played Djembe to rock the party. Colourful balloons from a huge net above the dancing floor were released by the President when the crowd was at its peak on the dance floor rocking away to scintillating music by Goa’s top band, Forefront.

The Lucky entrant winners were picked and the first prize video Camera won by Jovis Mathew sponsored by Modern Home, second prize washing machine won by Lance Pinto sponsored by Video Home and the third prize HP printer courtesy Ramdas Revadkar from Kuwait was taken by Anthony Mascarenhas. Bollywood comedian Jimmy Moses, popularly known as Junior Johny Lever, will perform at the ninth edition of May Queen Ball at Diplomatic Club, on May 7.
The organisers, Goan Welfare Association, said about 1,000 persons are expected to be attended the annual event.
Moses has been doing comedy for close to two decades and has performed in more than 26 countries, said Goan Welfare Association president Simon D’Silva.
He had acted alongside film celebrities, playback singers, and featured in many corporate shows over the years.
For Moses, veteran Johny Lever is a very good friend and a role model.

Mimbai-based Longines Fernandes who has his Goan roots in Asolna, South Goa is all set to appear in action for the ninth edition of the May Queen Ball on 7th May 2009 beginning at 9 pm at the Diplomatic Club organised by the Goan Welfare Association. Longines Fernandes popularly known as Longi will be presenting the popular dance sequence of Jai Ho and Pappu Can’t Dance Saala from “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” a film produced by Aamir Khan. It will be an opportunity for the winner of the May Queen contest to dance with Longie after the crowning. Longi sets his career to new heights in Bollywood and Hollywood as he embraces his newfound fame and achievements. At the 81st Academy Awards ceremony, director Danny Boyle thanked him in his acceptance speech, while receiving his award for Best Direction and recalled the contributions of Longi in making his film appealing to the audiences. Longi recently won the Best Choreography Award at the 54th Annual Filmfare Awards for his work in the film “Jaane tu ya jaane na” for Pappu Can’t Dance Saala. The Filmfare Awards are one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India; and Internationally he is most known as the choreographer of the closing credits dance sequence featuring Academy Award Original Song winning song, Jai Ho and another featuring O…Saaya, also nominated in the same category, in the film Slumdog Millionaire. Longines Fernandes, a widely acclaimed Bollywood choreographer, will attend this year’s May Queen Ball celebrations to be held at The Diplomatic Club on May 7.
Simon D’ Silva, president of the Goan Welfare Association which is organising the event, said Fernandes, who was the choreographer of the Slumdog Millionaire will present the popular dance sequence of Jai Ho from the Oscar winning film at the ninth edition of May Queen Ball.

Fernandes, popularly known as “Longi” will also perform the Pappu Can’t Dance Saala song from the Bollywood film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.
The choreographer has his roots in Asolna, in southern Goa and this is what prompted the organisation to invite him for this year’s function, said D’Silva.
The organisers said the winner of the May Queen contest will get an opportunity to dance with “Longi” after the crowning ceremony.

The band has blazed the music world with their sensational blend of vocals, instruments, rhythm, visual technique in trend and showmanship. The musical history of Forefront reveals amazing performances in India and abroad with several award winning live concerts that have virtually cornered them at the vertex of billboard graphs. Forefront was featured on the ace popular MTV channel and they also had the unique honour of being the fast group to perform unplugged.

Karishma Fernandez, a news producer and presenter who worked for Bombay World Space Satellite and currently with Arabian Radio Network Dubai will compere the show along with seasoned Updesh Swar from Goa.

DOHA: The ninth annual May Queen Ball organised by the Goan Welfare Association (GWA) in Qatar will feature India’s most celebrated and Goa’s premier band, Forefront.
To be held on May 7 at the Diplomatic Club, the dinner dance promises to be a fun-filled event, said GWA President Simon D’Silva.
The band has blazed the music world with its sensational blend of vocals, instruments, rhythm, visual techniques and showmanship. Their musical history reveals amazing performances in India and abroad with several award-winning live concerts that have virtually cornered them at the vertex of billboard graphs. Forefront was featured on the popular MTV channel and also had the honour of being the first group to perform unplugged.
Forefront are the best for pop and equally dazzling in rock, rap, reggae, bhangra, Goa’s ethnic dekhnni, mandos and dulpods. Their first album, titled ‘Always By Your Side’ turned out to be a super hit.

The Goan Welfare Association of Qatar (GWA) is organising the ninth edition of the May Queen Ball on May 7 at the Diplomatic Club.

GWA president Simon D’Silva said that due to demand, Goa’s Forefront band will be flown in once again to perform. The highlight of the event will be crowning of May Queen by “renowned Bollywood stars”, he added.
